What is an Electronic Cigarette anyway?

Electronic cigarettes are a better alternative to smoking tobacco cigarettes, as vapor contains negligible additives and generally produces no unpleasant odor; in fact, vapor often smells pleasant! The use of electronic cigarettes has a great appeal to those looking to switch from cigarettes to something better, because it caters to manual and oral fixations--with or without nicotine. With the wide array of flavors, smokers can experiment and find which flavors appeal to them, perhaps even venturing out into flavors that take you far away from cigarettes.

E-cigarette technology consists of three basic components: a battery operated device, a heating element, commonly referred to as an “atomizer” or a “coil”; and e-liquid, or “juice”, the component heated by the coil to produce vapor. These devices may sound complicated, but they are not; they’re quite easy to use.
E-cigs are a wonderful alternative to tobacco cigarettes, containing no tar, carbon monoxide, or the myriad 4,000 chemicals produced in cigarette smoke. Since there is no combustion of material and currently few regulations (depending on your jurisdiction), the use of e-cigarettes is generally allowed in most establishments, except where prohibited by company policies. 
The liquid we referred to briefly above generally consists of a few basic components: USP Propylene Glycol (PG) and/or USP Vegetable Glycerin (VG), flavorings (natural and artificial), and variable amounts of nicotine (ranging from 0-26mg). PG and VG are very common components in a wide range of foods, beverages, and in some cases, cosmetics, and both have been “generally recognized as safe” (GRAS) for human consumption. In a small portion of users, allergy or sensitivity to PG has been reported. Fortunately, we have liquids free of PG and based in VG to suit the needs of those with unpleasant or adverse reactions.
What purpose do PG and VG serve, you might ask? PG is generally responsible for carrying and highlighting flavors and is largely responsible for any sensation you may feel, or “throat hit”, that occurs when you inhale the vapor. For many former smokers, the ability to have a sensation when inhaling is vital for a satisfying experience. PG is also thin and tends to make e-liquid thinner, which is useful in many cases depending on what types of tanks, atomizers, cartomizers, etc. that you are using. 
VG, though an inherently sweeter substance, tends not to carry flavor quite as strongly as PG, produces little to no throat hit on its own, and is responsible for almost all of the visible vapor you see when inhaling and exhaling. It looks like smoke, but is not like smoke at all. The ability to see the vapor is crucial for most vapers for a satisfying experience.
