The Innovative Women of Vape in honor of Women’s History Month, Amy Lane Netherton
Amy Lane Netherton- President at Indiana Smoke-Free Alliance, VP of Sales/Marketing and Director of Regulatory Affairs at Flavors
Amy (Lane) Netherton is proud to be a woman in business in the United States. She was adopted from Vietnam in the 1970s during the Vietnam War and knows that her life could have turned out very differently.
“I understand wholly what a privilege it is to be in the United States and to be a woman business owner at that. That's something that could not be done in my country, back in the 70s, for sure,” said Amy. “I’ve come a long way from there.”
Known for her fiery determination, Amy has set herself on a path of success. She is the VP of Domestic/International Sales/Marketing and the Director of Regulatory Affairs at Flavor Revolution. She is also the current President of the Indiana Smoke-Free Alliance where she advocates for vaping rights.
Amy’s career, however, began in a completely different field. She studied Cell Biology at Purdue University and later became a paramedic. It was one of her frequent patients that introduced her to vaping.
“I was a working paramedic on a truck in the fall of 2013, and I had a patient that I used to run on all the time. He had massive [Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease] COPD issues. I was out at his house almost every time I worked on shifts giving him breathing treatments, and he was smoking, so heavy smoker,” she said.
She told him that he should quit smoking because it would probably cut down on his COPD incidents and exacerbations. That was their last encounter for a long time, and Amy wondered if something happened to him or if he died because he wasn't calling for the paramedics.
The following Spring, the patient resurfaced. He had taken Amy’s advice and quit smoking because he started vaping. She was so taken aback and impressed by his situation that she decided to get into the vaping industry. Amy and her husband opened their business in 2014.
Amy loved everything about the business and the opportunity to interact with customers. It was fulfilling for her to see how beneficial these products were in helping people to quit smoking.
In 2015, less than four months after they opened their business, there was industry chatter that the state government was working on a bill that would have a detrimental effect on the vaping businesses in Indiana. The news prompted over 600 people, 300 of which were business owners, to go to the State House. The bill was going to drastically reduce market share and force many vaping product manufacturers to shut down.
“We were at the State House going, are you serious right now? This is unbelievable,” Amy recalled. “There was no way I was going to lay down, like how in the world did this happen? When I put my mind to something, and I'm determined there's not much that stops me.”
Over the course of a year, Amy and other advocates learned everything they could about how the local government and political system worked. Their efforts culminated with the creation of the Indiana Smoke-Free Alliance in 2017 with the help of a technology association. This new alliance was committed to putting up a fight, and they were ultimately successful in changing the bill to get nine restrictive provisions removed.
Amy continues to fight for her business and the vaping industry and hopes more women have the opportunity to gain influence.
"Having that woman's touch on the inner workings and inner lanes of a business can make all the difference in the world, especially when you're trying to influence a senator, even your local mayor or county council person," she said.
Being in the industry has taught her so much; it has given her more confidence than she has ever had. She always strives to grow and embraces constructive criticism to become a better businesswoman and advocate.
She believes that “successful people do what unsuccessful people are not willing to do” and she has never been better positioned to do what needs to be done.
